Cable Track Lighting,
Is It Just What You Need?

Cable track lighting is very unique, as it has two separate wires, or cables, stretched across the room on which attaches the lights. These are very unusual because they don't conform to what most people consider a track light. Maybe that's why they're so popular?

The cables are stretched across the room and anchored at four points, one for each cable. They are also attached to the ceiling to support the weight of the fixtures, or heads. The sleek lines, and wow factor, make these lights a sight to behold. I haven't seen many homes with this style lighting, so to be unique this is the way to go.

Cable track lighting is a low voltage system using LED, CFL's, or halogen bulbs. The low voltage systems require a transformer to step down the voltage from 120v to 30v, which does increase the overall price.

The cables that carry the power are uninsulated, yes bare. They can be bare as they are low voltage and pose very little danger of shock as they are mounted high on the ceiling. You can find insulated cables but these are mostly used to run through walls or other obstructions.

Where Is A Good Place For This Style Light?

If you have a challenging area to try and mount a traditional lighting system, like high ceilings, these may solve your problem. Most cable track lights can span up to 20 ft without any extra support, as the cables are very strong. Also if you need to turn a corner you will need a turn kit. Turn kits simply hold the cable at the correct distance and angle, to make the turn without interference.

These cable systems are very good for task lighting, shedding some light in dark areas, and for general lighting. LED lights are good for task lighting as they use a more focused beam. Halogen and CFLs are good for general lighting as they use a wider beam pattern and usually emit more light.

Cable lighting has been popular in restaurants and museums for some time and they are now making there way into the home. If you have a challenging area to illuminate or simply want a different style of lighting, this may be just for you.
