Kitchen Sinks. Why Such A Major Decision?

Kitchen sinks have been around for centuries or even millenniums. They were believed to have been invented by prehistoric man. After they invented the wooden bowl, these bowls were used to store water and eventually were used to clean the other bowls.

Is this true? No one knows for sure. There is no denying the fact that the sink has a huge role in the modern kitchen. From food preparation, to cleaning up the mess, it has a part in all of this.

When choosing a kitchen sink it's important to take into consideration how you intend to use it. With the modern dishwashers that are available it's no longer a need to have a double bowl sink.

A double bowl sink greatly decreases the usefulness of the sink. By removing the center divider in the sink it opens up more possibilities to soak larger pans and dishes before they go into the dishwasher.

If you decide to have a double bowl sink it may be a good idea to not have a 50/50 split sink, but a sink that increases one bowls capacity over the other. For example a 60/40 or 70/30 split. This will also increase the usefulness of the sink without having to sacrifice the double bowl design.

If you prefer a certain sink style by all means pick what you like and feel happy with your decision, after all it is your kitchen and you know what you like. These are just some ideas to take into consideration, to help you narrow down your search.

    Available Sink Materials
  • Stainless steel is by far the most popular sink in today's modern kitchen. Stainless steel is easy to keep clean and has a wide selection of styles. It's ability to blend in, or be a focal point, is why these sinks are so popular.

  • Coming in second in popularity is solid surface sinks. Sinks such as Corian and Wilsonart.

  • Third is cast iron. Cast iron sinks have a traditional charm and are among the heavyweights. They have also found a place in the contemporary kitchen.

  • Fire clay sinks are another choice. Fire clay is normally seen in bathrooms but with added quartz it can be used in the kitchen.

  • Copper is a great choice because of it's natural antimicrobial properties, and it's beauty and charm. These make a great kitchen sink.

  • Sinks made of soapstone were popular in the early days of America. It's durability and easy tooling made it the number one choice. Soapstone is also a choice in countertops and sinks today.

  • Others include marble, granite, fiberglass, and even wood! Just to name a few.

Mounting Options
There are also mounting options such as under-mounting, aproned, and self rimming. Solid surface sinks can be glued to the underside of the countertop to make a seamless transition.

All Shapes and Sizes
Choices when it comes to size is large as well; with 22" by 33" being the standard. Single bowl, double bowl, depth, utility sinks, and many more. The shapes are numerous too!

Selection of a sink is a personal choice, as well as a budget decision. A handmade sink made of copper can cost as much as $5,000. While a fiberglass sink can cost as little as $50.With so many choices out there it's hard to know what to choose.
