Will Quartz Countertops
Overtake Granite In Popularity?

Engineered quartz countertops are very quickly becoming the most popular countertop material. Quartz kitchen countertops are a man made material and this makes them more uniform in appearance and density.

Similar in appearance to granite but twice as strong based on the amount of quartz in both. While quartz kitchen countertops are 93% quartz, granite is around 50%. Quartz tops have up to four times the flexural strength of granite. Quartz is also in the same price range of granite.

Quartz is the most abundant mineral in the earths crust. Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale for hardness, diamonds are 10. Pure quartz is white or clear and more common colors are rose, amethyst, and milky quartz.

Quartz kitchen countertops are 93% quartz and 7% pigments and resin. Once all of the components are mixed they are heated and compacted by vibration to form an extremely hard surface.

It's density makes it almost impenetrable to microbes and bacteria. Silestone has even gone a step further by introducing Microban into the manufacturing process.

Good cleaning habits are still required to minimize
the risk of food borne illnesses.

With these countertops being a man-made composition the colors are nearly endless. With Cosentino's Silestone having 65 colors to choose from.

Quartz tops are similar to granite in appearance, but not exactly. It's hard to match millions of years of formation time. Mother nature can't be copied but quartz comes very close.

A huge benefit of quartz over granite is the uniform appearance that quartz gives. There are no huge veins in quartz and the color is more uniform. Quartz has no flaws and it's very solid.

Installation is similar to granite. Quartz is easier to work with because it doesn't have imperfections. There is no worry of waste with quartz, due to unseen flaws being exposed while cutting, unlike granite.

Manufacturers include Cambria, DuPont, CaesarStone, and Cosentino. If granite is too busy looking, or not what you like then consider an engineered quartz countertop as an equal alternative. It's durability is among the highest of any countertop material.
