Is A Revolving Spice Rack
A Good Idea?

A revolving spice rack, or some prefer to call them carousel spice racks, has some advantages but does take up valuable real estate on the kitchen countertop. If you are already stretched for counter space this may not be the best option for you. On the other hand if have just the right spot for one of these racks then it may be a good option.

Spices have a longer lifespan when they are not exposed to light, and that is where these racks fall short. Most of the jars that come with carousel spice racks are glass or clear plastic. Light has no problem getting the spices and deteriorating them more quickly. Spices are not cheap and getting the longest usable life out of them is important.

On the bright side the capacity of some of these revolving spice racks is amazing. The largest ones can hold 48 spice bottles. Quite amazing when you think about it. Do keep in mind that the spice bottles with these larger racks are usually smaller than the spice bottles you buy from the store, which will require you to store the extra bottles elsewhere. This may be a problem seeing as though you are already looking for a more efficient way to store your spices, and having to store even more spice bottles can be a real pain if your space is limited.

These revolving racks are most commonly made of wood or plastic. This may be just what you want or maybe not. If the wood doesn't match your kitchen it will stand out more. You can refinish them or paint them to match you cabinets or simply leave them in their original finish, it's up to you. If you do decide to try and match the spice rack to your cabinets then you would want to buy an unfinished one. The unfinished wooden racks are hard to find though.

If a large carousel rack is not to your liking then you may want to consider a smaller one of maybe a 16 spice jar capacity or even an 8 spice jar capacity. These may be best for you over the larger capacities if you don't have a tone of spices or you're limited on space. These are also less intrusive and don't add as much of a cluttered look.

A revolving spice rack can be just want you want, or maybe not, it depends on your taste and how well you think it will fit into your kitchen. You, after all, know your kitchen the best and know what will work and what won't.
