A Test Tube Spice Rack?
What are the advantages of a test tube spice rack, and where can I find one? Why use this type of spice rack anyway? Does it really save any space? Is it expensive, or do the advantages make up for the cost? These are questions you may be asking yourself. Hopefully, I can shed some light on this "experimental" spice storage solution (awful joke, I know). A spice rack used to store test tubes is a solid idea. The tubes store less spice than their traditional counterparts and will require more filling though. Not to mention the mouth of the test tubes is narrow and will require the use of a small funnel to fill them. These are small disadvantages in the overall usefulness of this type of spice rack. These racks will store up to 40 spice tubes, and because they are thin and long they take up much less counter space than other spice racks. They are also easily moved if need be. Since most of the test tubes are made from plastic the weight is low and there is no worry of breaking any glass. One thing to keep in mind is you will not be able to see the labels. So unless you know exactly what spice is in what place you may end up going through the spices one by one. This may be frustrating until you learn where all the spices are. I would recommend sorting the spices into categories to help lessen your potential frustration. The tubes are most commonly sealed with a cork stopper. The cork provides an airtight seal and, I think, also makes the tubes look a little better. Cork is easily obtained so if you happen to lose one of the stoppers or it happens to fall apart you can replace it with a wine stopper or something similar. The prices of these test tube spice racks can be quite steep. This depends on if you want the tubes to come filled with spice or not. The racks themselves are inexpensive but the spices are not. We've all been to the grocery store and have seen the price of spices. If you don't have a large selection of spices it may be cost effective to buy the tubes pre-filled. Just be sure you buy from a reputable company like Dean & Deluca. Buying the least expensive option may not be good if you like fresh spices. Dean & Deluca test tube spice racks cost around a $150 so it's not cheap but the quality is high. Dean & Deluca test tube racks come pre-filled with 40 of the most used spices and a metal rack. The biggest disadvantage of these racks for most people is the looks. It may not fit well with some kitchen styles but it takes up such a small area that it doesn't make a huge impact on the looks of your kitchen. But if you have to have more than one of these than it may be a different story. Overall, if you need the space savings and you like the idea of this style of spice storage then I say go for it. The advantages, in my opinion, outweigh the disadvantages by a wide margin. The amount of space saved, having your spices neatly organized near your cooktop, range, or prep area is what most people look for when choosing a spice rack. The test tube spice rack can accomplish all of your spice storage needs with little effort.
