Tumbled Stone with Stain

by Evelyn
(Neosho, MO)

I would like to put some stain on some of the tumbled stone backsplash when it is put up. Do I put that on after the sealer, or before?

Hi Evelyn,

It's almost always recommended that stains, or dyes, are applied before the sealers. Be sure, if you're using a dedicated stone stain, to check the manufacturers recommendations.

Some stone enhancers, or stains, do not require a sealer, as they contain waxes or other waterproofing agents. Applying a sealer over these products is not recommended because the sealer will not penetrate into the stone, and may actually fall off over time.

If you're using a stone dye, use only a water-based dye. A water based dye will allow the color to penetrate the stone without preventing the sealer from adhering. In this case the sealer would go on after the stain. Just be sure to let the colorant dry for a full day before applying the sealer.

Also be sure the stone is fully protected from stains by applying as many coats of sealer as needed. A good way to check this is to place a droplet of water on the stone after the first coat is fully dry, and see if the water soaks into the stone. If it soaks in then another coat is needed. This is paramount to prevent stains in the future.

I would also recommend staining the stones before applying them to the wall. This way you can sort out the stones that stain lighter or darker than you prefer. As stone is a natural product there is no way to tell how dark, or light, the stone will stain.

After the stones are on the wall there is no way to change them. Also, pre-staining will prevent any accidents and keep the rest of the stones clear of any unwanted stain.

Thank you for your question, and be please come back and show us how your project went. I'm sure there are others who are considering staining their stone backsplashes and would like to know how it looks!

Thanks Again,
