The Victorian Kitchen

The Victorian kitchen is very ornate with highly detailed crown mouldings and raised arch panel doors. Heavy woods such as oak, maple, walnut, and cherry are the woods of choice, but almost any hardwood can be used.

The Victorian Era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 1837 to 1901 in England. Due to the rise of profits from overseas trading, and industrial improvements, gave rise to an educated and expanded middle class. Which allowed for more people to spend more money on luxuries such as highly ornate houses and more amenities.

The Victorian kitchen is the most highly ornate of all kitchen styles, with dentil moulding , rope moulding, corbels, and fluting details in this kitchen. Being too ornate in this kitchen is not possible.

Natural materials such as granite, stone, and wood are well placed in this style. With hardwood floors of the highest quality being an absolute must.

Colors common in this kitchen are white, and natural wood tones. Plaster walls and ceilings with crown mouldings and medallions are also a must have in this kitchen. Lighter colors are harder to keep clean and this was a big deal back in Victorian Times because of the opportunity to be able to hire servants to do the cleaning. A sign of the times, more money for amenities.

Lighting is also very ornate with chandeliers and wall sconces in the kitchen. Under cabinet lighting is also a great addition to the lighting scheme, to highlight the countertops and add more detail.

Modern appliances with a vintage look are also a great addition to this kitchen. There are more and more vintage appliance manufacturers who specialize in period appliances.

With the Victorian style kitchen no detail is over the top. In fact the more detail the better in this kitchen.
