A wine refrigerator, for wine connoisseurs, is the perfect addition to the dream kitchen. Even if you're not a big wine drinker there are sizes of refrigerators to match your level of wine drinking. Wine refrigerators are also called wine coolers. Wine cellar refrigerators are another type of wine storage but a wine cellar controls humidity as well as temperature.
These refrigerators are meant to be a place to keep wine at just the right temperature; to preserve the wine and not just keep it cold. If you have expensive tastes in wine and want to incorporate an appliance specifically for preserving your investment this is the only way to go.
Wines have different temperature requirements and most wine refrigerators are capable of adjusting the temperatures based on what wine you are storing. There are also dual zone refrigerators which allow for multiple wine type storage. These are more expensive though.
Digital touch-pads and high efficiency motors are features of the best wine refrigerators. Of course the more features, the more expensive it will be. Prices start at around $100 and only go up from there; all the way up to $2,000 for a commercial unit that's the size of a standard refrigerator.
Sizes start at 6 bottles and continue up to 166 bottles. There are so many different sizes and capacities available that it's almost impossible to list them all. So with that being said there is no doubt that one of these refrigerators will fit into any kitchen or pantry. You can also find ones that can be placed on the countertop, but these take up a lot of space.
These refrigerators are available in free standing and built-in. If you already have an established kitchen a free standing unit will allow you to have this type unit without having to tear your kitchen apart. If you are in the planning stages of your remodel then a built-in would be the better choice; because it can be built seamlessly into the design.
The benefits of a built-in unit is the fact that it can be placed anywhere in the design that it best fits. With a free standing unit you are some what limited in it's placement. A free standing unit also has the downfall of having to be out into the room; which will give you less overall space.
This appliance is great way to go if you need extra space to store your wine, or if you plan on having an expensive collection of wine. Keeping the wine at hand and at the perfect temperature will not only preserve the taste, but the entire wine drinking experience.
But the better wines such as Fume Blanc will improve if brought out 20 minutes early and allowed to warm up slightly before drinking.
Red wines are best served at temps between 59 and 65 degs Fahrenheit. This is the highest serving temperature of all wines.
Chardonnays and other full bodied, high quality, white wines are best served and stored at 55 degs Fahrenheit; the classic cellar temperature.
Dessert wines are treated them same as Pinot Grigio when it comes to temperature. 40 degs Fahrenheit is best; Sherry is also in the same temperature range.
Champagne and other sparkling wines should be very cold to start; 35 to 42 degs Fahrenheit. Some of the more expensive champagnes will benefit from a slight warming prior to drinking to let the maturity and character come to life.
As you can see the common refrigerator is not capable of maintaining the required temperatures for wine storage. If you are really serious about wine, then a wine refrigerator is a must have appliance.
