Wood Range Hoods. Is It Just What Your Kitchen Needs?

Wood range hoods are a great way to add an upscale look and feel to your kitchen. Whether you're replacing and old hood to match your existing kitchen, or planning a new kitchen, a wooden hood is an excellent choice. I really like this style of range hood because it eliminates the "sticking out like a sore thumb" look that some range hoods have.

Do note that wooden range hoods are expensive. But the outstanding look of these works of art is priceless. If you want a truly custom hood, a cabinetmaker (or your custom cabinetmaker) can make one to match your kitchen style perfectly. By having a custom made hood you are assured that no one will ever have your design of range hood.

One the other hand if you would like a more plainly styled hood you can get one as well. Some range hood manufacturers, such as Futuro Futuro, Knape & Vogt, and National Products, offer mass produced wood range hoods. Their prices start at around $600 and go as high as $2000, not inexpensive but a quality made hood from a quality manufacturer ensures a hood that will operate for many, many years.

There are also range hood covers available. These covers do simply that, cover up your existing range hood with a wood cover. This is also a good compromise if your budget does not allow for a true wooden hood. Do note that most times there needs to be custom cuts and fitting required to ensure a flawless fit, and of course with all things this is not always the case.

If you or someone you know does not feel comfortable making the required measurements and cuts you may want to hire a professional. One mistake can ruin your new cover and you will have to purchase a replacement, just something to think about.

When are wood range hoods a must have? When you have built in appliances or panel covered appliances. Your kitchen designer should also mention this when you are planning out your kitchen, and if they don't you can remind them.

I personally have seen this quite a few times, where the appliances are hidden behind panels but the range hood is not. It took the focus off of the fabulous kitchen and put it squarely on a range hood that seemed to be out of place. Remember a small mistake in aesthetics can bring down the whole design.

In closing, wood range hoods are a fantastic addition to most kitchens. For a little extra money you can really add a detail that makes the whole kitchen "pop". But of course not all wooden hoods fit into every style of kitchen so use your best judgment and follow your instincts, they are correct most of the time.
